- Tampons and pads aren't good for the environment. A moon cup is eco-friendly!
- You only need 2! Which in the long term is so much more affordable. Goodbye monthly costs!
-Tampons and pads use bleach and chemicals which are toxic for your body.
- Silicone is safer and does not dry out your uterus.
- A cup seems icky but really its not! You have to try it to understand - THEY DON'T LEAK!!
There is a māori owned business that I am going to recommend (of course) but even better when you purchase from them they donate another moon cup to a woman in need.
As sustainable methods of living grow and evolve - There are lots of brands to choose from now!
Hygiene

It is so important to keep good hygiene during your cycle! Please be vigilant when washing and sterilizing your moon cup. Toxic shock syndrome can be very dangerous and is avoidable through the appropriate cleaning methods that we will discuss here:
1.) When you first open your moon cup packaging sterilize it using your sterilizer. A sterilizer is just a small container that you will use just for cleaning you moon cup. First, boil water, then place your moon cup into the steriliser. Then pour boiling water into steriliser and cover with lid. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF WITH THE WATER.
After the water has cooled, take it out and dry it with either a clean towel or paper towelette. Then you’re ready to go!.
2.) When you first start using your moon cup, it would be good to check it frequently to assess your flow. On days 1-3 of your period it would be useful to check every 2-3 hours until you get the hang of it all! Rinsing it THOROUGHLY after each use.
3.) DO NOT put it down on the ground or sit it on any objects as you may pick up bacteria. It is helpful to use CLEAN toilet paper to hold it or put it down if you need to.
4.) WET WIPES will make tidying up easier. Do not flush the wet wipes as they can block the toilet and that’s uuuhh embarrassing.
5.) Hand sanitize. WHAT A GOD SEND! For your hands, not your cup. You will have trouble if you try to use antibacterial wash for your lady parts. It will mess with your natural flora and fauna. Don’t do that.
6.) At the end of the day use the moon cup sanitize and boiling water (see the bullet point 1) to clean your moon cup. It is good to have 2 moon cups so that you can swap over while sanitizing the other.
7.) ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS.
INSERTION
Yeah it’s a little awkward! There is more than one way to insert your moon cup. We all have different bodies so test it out and see what suits you best. The following is a picture of how to fold the cup. Just keep trying until it is comfortable. It should NOT BE PAINFUL. If it hurts, you’ve done it wrong. Always wash your hands and always sterilize your cup at the end of the day.
In the picture below you will see 6 different methods of insertion.
